About

What is Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)?

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a complex eating disorder characterized by an extreme avoidance or restriction of food intake that results in significant weight loss, nutritional deficiency, and/or impaired psychosocial functioning. Unlike other eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, ARFID is not primarily driven by concerns about body shape or weight. Instead, individuals with ARFID may experience sensory issues, aversions to certain foods, fear of adverse consequences associated with eating, or a lack of interest in eating.

ARFID can manifest in various ways, including selective eating, limited food variety, avoidance of specific textures or tastes, and reluctance to try new foods. Children with ARFID may exhibit feeding difficulties, refusal to eat certain foods, or failure to meet expected growth milestones. Adults with ARFID may struggle with nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, and challenges in social or occupational functioning.

Diagnosis, Signs and Symptoms of ARFID:

Diagnosis of ARFID is based on criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Key signs and symptoms of ARFID may include:

  • \Persistent failure to meet appropriate nutritional and/or energy needs, leading to significant weight loss or failure to achieve expected weight gain in children.
  • \Nutritional deficiencies or dependence on nutritional supplements.
  • \Marked interference with psychosocial functioning, such as impaired relationships, decreased performance at school or work, and social withdrawal.

Individuals with ARFID may exhibit various behaviors and characteristics, including extreme pickiness or selective eating, avoidance of certain foods or food groups based on sensory issues or aversions, fear of choking or vomiting, lack of interest in eating or food-related activities, and anxiety or distress related to food consumption.

How we treat ARFID:

At Remedy Therapy Center for Eating Disorders, we provide specialized treatment for ARFID tailored to each individual’s needs. Our comprehensive approach may include:

Nutritional rehabilitation:

Our team of registered dietitians works closely with clients to create personalized meal plans, gradually reintroduce avoided foods, and expand food variety to ensure adequate nutrition and promote healthy eating behaviors.

Exposure therapy:

Under the guidance of skilled therapists, individuals are gradually exposed to feared or avoided foods in a supportive and controlled environment. Through systematic desensitization techniques, anxiety related to food consumption is reduced, and tolerance is increased.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT):

Our therapists address maladaptive thoughts and beliefs about food, eating, and consequences through evidence-based CBT techniques. By challenging distorted cognitions and implementing behavioral interventions, clients develop healthier attitudes and behaviors surrounding food.

Family-based therapy:

Family involvement is integral to our treatment approach, especially for children and adolescents with ARFID. Our therapists work collaboratively with families to provide education, support, and guidance in managing feeding difficulties and promoting healthy eating habits at home.

Our Dual Diagnosis Approach to Treating ARFID:

We recognize that individuals with ARFID may also struggle with co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or sensory processing disorders. Our dual diagnosis approach addresses these underlying issues alongside the eating disorder, providing integrated treatment to promote lasting recovery and improved overall well-being. By addressing the complex interplay between ARFID and other mental health conditions, we ensure comprehensive care and support for each individual’s unique needs.

Health Risks Health consequences of ARFID:

Untreated ARFID can lead to a range of health consequences, including:

Malnutrition:

Inadequate food intake can result in nutritional deficiencies, impaired growth and development, and compromised physical health.

Weight loss or failure to thrive:

Persistent avoidance or restriction of food can lead to significant weight loss, failure to achieve expected growth milestones, and developmental delays.

Nutritional deficiencies:

Limited food variety and inadequate nutrient intake can lead to deficiencies in essential vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients, increasing the risk of health complications.

Impaired growth and development:

Malnutrition and inadequate nutrition can negatively impact physical growth, cognitive development, and overall well-being, particularly in children and adolescents.

Social isolation and withdrawal:

ARFID-related feeding difficulties and food aversions may lead to social withdrawal, decreased participation in social activities involving food, and impaired relationships with family and peers.

Psychological distress and reduced quality of life:

Anxiety, depression, and other psychological symptoms may accompany ARFID, affecting mood, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.

Goals of Treatment

The goals of treating someone with an eating disorder extend beyond their stay at our facility, focusing on long-term recovery and improved quality of life. After completing our comprehensive treatment program, the overarching objectives include:

Normalization of Eating Behaviors:

The primary goal of treatment for ARFID is to help individuals establish a healthy and balanced approach to eating. This involves expanding food variety, reducing food avoidance, and promoting regular and adequate food intake to meet nutritional needs.

Improvement of Nutritional Health:

Treatment aims to address nutritional deficiencies and restore optimal nutritional status. Registered dietitians work closely with clients to create personalized meal plans, gradually reintroduce avoided foods, and ensure adequate intake of essential nutrients.

Reduction of Anxiety and Fear:

Many individuals with ARFID experience anxiety, fear, or distress related to food consumption. Treatment focuses on reducing these emotional barriers through exposure therapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, and relaxation strategies to increase tolerance and acceptance of a wider range of foods.

Enhancement of Social Functioning:

ARFID-related feeding difficulties and food aversions can lead to social isolation and withdrawal. Treatment aims to improve social functioning and relationships by addressing communication barriers, providing social support, and promoting participation in social activities involving food.

Development of Coping Skills:

Individuals with ARFID may benefit from learning coping skills to manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges related to food and eating. Therapists provide tools and strategies to help individuals cope with triggers, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and build resilience in challenging situations.

Education and Support for Families:

Family involvement is crucial in the treatment of ARFID, especially for children and adolescents. Treatment goals include providing education, support, and guidance to families in managing feeding difficulties, promoting healthy eating habits, and creating a supportive home environment conducive to recovery.

Improvement of Quality of Life:

Ultimately, the goal of treatment for ARFID is to improve overall quality of life by reducing symptoms, enhancing well-being, and fostering independence and autonomy in managing food-related challenges. Treatment aims to empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives free from the constraints of their eating disorder.
